Mobile phone use to impact on commercial vehicle insurance

Companies employing van or commercial vehicle drivers would do well to make their employees aware of new penalties for illegal mobile phone use which go live from today (February 27th).
The tougher new penalties will see the cost of a fixed penalty notice double from £30 to £60 for those caught committing the offence and the awarding of three penalty points on drivers' licences.
According to the Department of Transport, 21 per cent of drivers have admitted to breaking the law regarding mobile phone use while driving.
"Research shows that talking on a mobile phone while driving affects your concentration and ability to react to dangerous situations," commented transport secretary Douglas Alexander.
"It's quite simple - it's impossible to do two things at once and do them well."
It was recently revealed that motorists who continue to flout this law will be subjected to higher car insurance premiums.
According to AA Insurance, premiums could be up to four times higher than the cost of the penalty notice.
