Youthful drivers 'waste £140 million per year'

Young and inexperienced drivers waste over £140 million each year in mechanics fees, it has been revealed.
According to a survey by car and commercial vehicle insurance provider, Direct Line, 37 per cent of 18 to 24 year-olds who have passed struggle when checking the level of their car's brake fluid.
Furthermore, the survey found that 50 per cent of young drivers do not know how to jump start their car, compared to 25 per cent of drivers aged over 45.
"It is important for drivers to be able to make basic safety checks on their vehicle, such as checking tyre pressure and oil level," commented Emma Holyer a spokesperson for Direct Line.
For companies with commercial vehicle insurance who employ drivers, it could be prudent to ensure that younger members staff are knowledgeable in regards to car maintenance to avoid costly mechanic fees.
Also revealed in the survey was that more than four in ten drivers have waited for their vehicle's annual service to fix some of these problems.
