Brits urged to insure frozen fortunes

Britons have been urged to ensure the content of their freezer is covered by their home insurance. Research by Halifax Home Insurance has revealed that the average household has £145 worth of food in their freezer at anyone time. With the nation's freezers expected to be packed full in preparation for the bank holiday weekend, and with replacing freezer contents coming at a notable expense, insurers are reminding consumers to ensure their frozen food is covered by their home contents insurance. Vicky Emmott, of Halifax Home Insurance, said: "With millions of people across the UK set to hold barbecues over the bank holiday this weekend, it would be an absolute nightmare for the freezer - packed full of all those gourmet goodies - to suddenly break down. "Its not just the hungry guests that need to be dealt with; its the financial burden of all that food going to waste. Having your freezer contents covered against damage by your insurer can make a huge difference." It has been estimated that there will be over £6.8 million claims for spoilt frozen food this year, with 35 per cent of these occurring during the summer months.
