Britons choose dogs over homes

Homeowning couples should make sure they have insurance cover for their pets as well as their homes, as a recent survey has revealed that seven out of ten Britons would choose their dog over ownership of their house in the event of a break-up. The research, conducted by Norwich Union, found that two thirds of respondents said they would make a case for custody of the cat, and over half (57 per cent) said they would put up a fight over the fish-tank. Leading pet behavioural expert, Carrie Evans, commented on the findings: "A household pet can function as a third person in a relationship, a role which enables them to manipulate the behaviour of both parties and disrupt the balance. "While a third of respondents admit pets and their upkeep can be a cause of arguments its surprising that almost a quarter of those questioned are prepared to commit to a pet by the time they move in with a partner, if not earlier." Finding cheaper home insurance could help to alleviate some of the financial tensions in relationships that could lead to break-ups, and pet insurance is always encouraged to cover veterinary bills for beloved animals.
