Cheaper insurance needed for Wednesday nights

British homes are more likely to be burgled on a Wednesday night, according to new research. Churchill Home Insurance, who conducted the survey, said that burglars were most likely to strike during the week, although Friday and Saturday nights were also high on the list. The research shows that homes are just as vulnerable during the week as they are at weekends. Thursday nights top the 'most-burgled' list for London and the south-east, although in the north-east, houses are most at risk on a Saturday afternoon. Martin Scott, head of home insurance, says: "Our findings show that burglars will target homes on week nights as well as weekends and that homes need to be secure at all times, whether people are at home or not." Wednesday nights are recently becoming more popular, with a greater number of midweek football games and television stations eyeing the slot as an ideal night to launch new programmes, such as Lost and Desperate Housewives, making Wednesday staying-in night. However, Mr Scott urges homeowners to follow simple precautions even when staying in and watching TV, such as locking windows in rooms that are not being used, and securely fastening front and back doors when going to bed. "Burglaries can obviously occur at any time but a few simple precautions can make a real difference. "Home owners should always be mindful of the risk of burglary and secure windows and doors when going out, even if it is only to visit a neighbour for a few minutes, " Mr Scott concluded. Homeowners are also urged to seek out cheaper home and home contents insurance to help safeguard themselves and their possessions, should the worst happen.
