Good neighbours watch British homes

Britain is a nation of good neighbours, as a recent survey has revealed 97 per cent would keep an eye on their neighbour's home when they were away. Despite the English having a reputation for keeping to themselves, recent research has shown that many will keep a look out for any suspicious activity around their neighbours' houses. The survey by Barclays Insurance found that one in three Britons would call the police if they noticed anyone acting suspiciously, with almost a quarter admitting they would 'have a go' themselves to prevent a crime. "Whilst we certainly would not encourage people to put their safety at risk by dealing directly with suspicious behaviour, it is reassuring to know that people look out for each other without being asked," said Adrian Grace, managing director of Barclays Insurance Services. However, Mr Grace added he would encourage homeowners to forgo the traditional British reserve and actively inform their neighbours they are heading away, so they are aware of unknown visitors. "And of course you should also make sure you have adequate insurance cover in case the worst should happen whilst youre away," he said.
