Home insurance claims 'surge' after Halloween

UK homeowners should beware of little devils tonight, as malicious damage to property could triple following Halloween this year, according to Lloyds TSB Insurance. Home insurance claims shot up by 150 per cent last October as damage caused by malevolent trick-or-treaters tripled, say the insurers. "With trick-or-treaters out in force at Halloween, a rise in claims for malicious damage to our homes might be expected. But the fact that claims triple might come as a surprise," said Lloyds TSB Insurance managing director Phil Loney. "It shows that while ghosts and ghouls may not be a threat, we should still do everything possible to protect our homes." Claims from last year included a window being shattered by a broomstick, carpets burned by lit pumpkins, walls and carpets damaged by spray paint and (fake) blood and wallpaper ruined by egg yolk. The insurance firm is urging homeowners to double check they have adequate home contents insurance to cover any Halloween-related incidents. Experts suggest shopping around online to find cheaper quotes for home insurance, in order to cover homeowners against the dreaded wrath of trick-or-treaters.
