Homeowners are being reminded to ensure their homes are fully insured over the festive period, as around 80,000 homes are expected to be targeted by burglars over the next few weeks. Bradford & Bingley is one of many insurers urging homeowners to add any expensive gifts or new items onto their household policies, as many existing insurance deals may not cover them for the extra value added to their homes if they get burgled. However, burglary is not the only Christmas hazard homeowners are being cautioned about fire risk from overheating fairy lights and electrical Christmas decorations are the cause of many accidents and insurance claims, according to the insurer. The average spend on presents this year is expected to be around £310 each. However, the total cost of crime could be around £50 million. Dave Foyle, head of general insurance at Bradford & Bingley, said: "Christmas is a time for enjoying family, friends and festivities. Knowing that you are sufficiently insured should the worst happen means you can enjoy your celebrations stress-free, safe in the knowledge your home and its contents are protected."
