ABI: House insurance 'will cover' Buncefield explosion damage

Homes and businesses damaged in the Buncefield explosion are covered, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI). Sunday's explosions at the Buncefield fuel depot in Hemel Hempstead, north of London, damaged dozens of homes, shattering windows and breaking roofs. However, the ABI has confirmed that households with home insurance are covered from damage caused by explosions. Spokesman Malcom Tarling told the Scotsman: "As far as home insurance is concerned, damage caused by explosion will be covered. "And the same goes for businesses, there are quite a few businesses affected. The standard business policy covers that." Mr Tarling also said that some householders' policies could cover them for smoke damage, as the raging fire continues to belch out clouds of noxious fumes. He added: "Most policies have 24 hour emergency helplines, if people ring them, they'll tell them what to do. "And if you're having broken windows repaired, for example, keep receipts from the glaziers, they will form part of the claim." Businesses stranded by the fires could also claim for interruption cover, if they cannot access their sites for whatever reason, Mr Tarling said.
