Gadgets 'not covered by most home insurance'

It has been claimed that the majority of home insurance policies do not cover new gadgets such as iPods and MP3 players. According to a specialist home insurance company, most policies do not cover the devices and people may also find it impossible to claim for music stored on them. Hiscox has revealed that the number of iPods being stolen in muggings in London alone has increased by 500 per cent since last November, but many people are left unable to claim for the devices on their home insurance. "Music fans stand to lose both their iPod or MP3 player and their music library if their player is stolen," said Kevin Kerridge, head of direct business at Hiscox. "Unless their songs are backed up on a PC, the cost could be huge. For example and iPod Mini or Nano can store 1,000 songs which can cost 79p each to download. This means a full library could be worth up to £790." Portable equipment is often not covered by standard home insurance policies, he explained. Mr Kerridge said that consumers should ensure they find adequate home insurance cover because "to lose both an iPod and your own personal music library without any insurance is a frustrating and unnecessary double whammy".
