Brits who intend to save money by having their New Year's Eve parties at home could in fact end up with higher bills from damages to their homes and possessions, according to a new survey. Cornhill Direct claims that one in four people have attended a New Year's Eve party at a friend or relative's house where something has been broken or badly damaged. It adds that the average claim for a New Year's Eve disaster comes in at £750, with the most common damages being wine spills on the carpet, cigarette burns to soft furnishings and broken ornaments. Harry Rule, claims manager at Cornhill said: "We believe that the average New Year party claim costs around £750 but we have dealt with incidents at teenage parties that have cost much more. "We would strongly recommend that you move as many of your possessions out of the way as possible. Anything can happen when New Year party fever takes hold." Homeowners are also strongly urged to check up on their home insurance policies, to ensure they are adequately covered should anything go wrong. Many home contents insurance value limits may have been upgraded over the Christmas period to take expensive Christmas gifts into account, but homeowners are encouraged to double check to see if they are covered. If they are not, experts advise shopping around online to find the cheapest home insurance quotes in order to avoid welcoming in 2006 with a large bill to pay.
