Home workers reminded on home insurance renewal

Many workers may not be too disheartened if their workplace was to suffer an unfortunate accident that would prevent them from attending, but for home-workers a fire or burglary can be hugely expensive if they do not have adequate home or home contents insurance. Therefore, home-workers are being urged to take account of their business when they renew their home insurance policy. Almost one in five people now work from home, a third of which are running their own business. Inevitably most of these store expensive work related items at home, with three quarters saying they have a computer and others keeping stock or even business-related cash at home. Helen Blenkinsopp, of insurance broker BiB, was quoted by ic Teeside saying: "A recent survey showed that 18 per cent of all homes in the UK contain a home worker, which means a lot of business is being done from people's houses. "A typical household contents policy will cover loss of computer equipment so it's vital that home workers at least ensure they have this cover in place." However, while home insurance will cover the replacement of stolen goods, if the theft of a computer prevents a home-worker from doing their job they will not be compensated for loss of income. Similarly cash kept at home and items lost in transit will not normally be covered.
