Home insurance warning for Romantic Brits
Posted :

Brits are a romantic bunch, with new research showing that 32 per cent of holidays in February will culminate in a spontaneous marriage proposal. However, prospective Romeo's are being urged to ensure their ring is covered on their home insurance, or risk more than their sweetheart saying no. The survey by AA Insurance found that 55 per cent of people have meticulously planned their holiday proposal, while a third had already bought the ring. However, for the more than 100,000 people for whom the answer is no the meticulous planning can be an expensive venture, with an average holiday plus ring costing approximately £1,165. By and large people chose to propose abroad because they wanted the occasion to be extra special, or they thought the occasion would be more memorable' away from home. However, should couples lose valuables, an unfamiliar judicial system and language problems often make it infinitely harder to recover property when abroad. Therefore, people looking to propose abroad are urged to ensure everything valuable they take with them is covered by their home insurance policy. The YouGov research also found that proposing abroad is a growing trend, with 24 per cent of 18 to 29 year-olds proposing abroad, compared to just five per cent of those over 50. "It's definitely a growing trend for people to get engaged abroad," said Kevin Sinclair, managing director of AA Insurance. "And with so many diamond rings being nervously carried in pockets, jewellery can easily be lost, damaged or even stolen. But you can extend your home insurance to cover jewellery and other property, come to that anywhere in the world. "If you've spent a small fortune on a ring you can at least cover that cost if it all goes wrong even if you cant insure against a broken heart."
