Owners urged to cover bicycles on home insurance

By cycling to work you may be doing your bit for the environment and getting fit at the same time, but with over 100,000 bikes stolen in the UK last year, cyclists are being urged to ensure their bike is covered on their home insurance policy. While car or motorbike insurance is a legal requirement - even if not everyone complies - but bikes can often be overlooked by homeowners when renewing their home insurance policies. However, with new bikes costing into the hundreds of pounds, neglecting to insure your bike could be a potentially costly mistake. Recent government figures showed that 131,000 bikes were reported stolen in 2005, many of which were uninsured, even though most home insurance providers will allow customers to add their bikes to their household contents cover for an extra £20 to £40. However, cyclists must check whether this covers them for third party liability or just theft. "For car drivers it's a legal requirement but for cyclists it's up to the individual," Richard Mason of Insuresupermarket.com was quoted by the Daily Telegraph as saying. Meanwhile, the government figures also revealed that 35,000 cyclists suffered accidents on British roads in 2005.
