Unwanted guests warrant home insurance cover

With summer almost here the time of year when creepy crawlies of all varieties make their household presence known is upon us. Wasp or ant nests, termites and a host of other pests are not only an inconvenience and potentially expensive to remove, but can cause extensive and expensive damage if not covered by adequate home insurance.

Wasps are a particularly major problem as nests that are left undisturbed can sustain populations in excess of 25,000 during their annual cycle. Although wasps never reuse an old nest the presence of one nearby would suggest that conditions are suitable for them to thrive.

Fortunately there are several simple measures people can takes to minimise their chances of infestation. Householders should have a nest removed as soon as it is noticed, although residents are urged never to do so themselves but to leave it to the professionals.

Homeowners must look in all areas when checking for infestations as the most inconvenient places are usually the most appropriate for pests to thrive. Attics, sheds and in trees or shrubs are common places to find wasps and all manner of pests.

Homeowners are also urged to shop around for the best deal. The pest control industry is unregulated so there are no controls on pricing. Many firms charge extortionate prices so it is worth making the effort to find a reasonable price.

Alternatively, some providers offer pest cover as part of a home insurance policy, which could potentially save a considerable amount in the long run.

Nikki Sellers, head of Home Insurance at esure.com, said: "Pests in the home can cause structural damage, damage to home contents, health problems, and create fear - especially as wasp stings are occasionally responsible for violent reactions such as anaphylactic shock.

"During the spring ‘bug season’ homeowners should not delay in seeking professional advice if they notice any wasp activity - or the beginnings of a nest - in their home or garden. Never DIY, always call in the professionals but be aware that you could be stung with a hefty bill if you don’t have pest cover."
