Over 520 pets are stolen every day, with about 200,000 pets being stolen last year alone, according to new research. Owners who have had pets stolen number in the hundreds of thousands, research by Sainsbury's Bank found, underlining the importance of pet insurance. Dogs are the most likely pet to be stolen, it was found. Simon Worsfold, of the Missing Pets' Bureau said: "We have dealt with an alarming number of pet-nappings recently and over the last 12 months cases of dog theft have more than doubled. "This is something all pet owners need to be aware of because thieves target all types of pets and not just pedigrees." About 456,000 dogs were taken from their owners in the last five years and 400,715 cats were stolen in the same period. Last year there were 26,000 insurance claims for stolen dogs. Recently it was discovered by Sainsbury's Bank that only six per cent of pet insurance policies offer adequate cover.
