Woolwich firemen have been teaching local schoolchildren the importance of fire safety around the home. The initiative was started when it was found that a full quarter of calls about accidental home fires came from a certain small area of Woolwich, reports This is Local London. Firemen are called out to accidental home fires which can potentially causing thousands of pounds worth of expenses for those without insurance cover in Woolwich at least once a week. Woolwich station manager Adam Carter told This is Local London: "We also hope instead of the children pushing their parents for toys and sweets, they will now push them to buy smoke alarms. "I will look at the data soon to find out how the number of fires has been reduced compared to last year. We hope to see a steady reduction in the number fires over the next few years." Every year there are over 40,000 accidental house fires in England, however despite this, over a third of homes do not have insurance against it, according the Association of British Insurers.
