Burglaries drop as street crime rises

The nature of crime in the UK is changing, as the amount of burglaries has dropped, but the level of street crime has risen, according to research by More Than home insurance providers. However, despite the number of burglaries dropping, over £1 billion of goods are stolen from houses every year, the statistics said. Thieves are frequently ignoring heftier items like televisions and concentrating on smaller but more valuable items like jewellery, cash and handbags containing credit cards. Craig Allen, head of home insurance for More Than, said: "Increased household security has made an impact on the opportunist thief, as has the falling price of consumer goods like videos and DVD players. "The best advice is to take sensible preventative measures. We urge people not to advertise valuable items when out on the streets and to make sure all items are insured." As the summer rolls on, More Than has advised homeowners not to carelessly leave windows and doors open where an opportunist can break in. The Met Office has predicted the hot weather to continue over the next week, though there could be thunder storms on Saturday, followed by a cooler day on Sunday.
