Currently students own an average of £2,900 worth of possessions, which amounts to 50 per cent more than they did in 1996, according to new research.
Two out of three undergraduates now own laptops and 55 per cent now own iPods or other MP3 players, research by Direct Line home insurance has found.
However the survey also found that at least 24 per cent of students don't bother to insure these expensive items.
Simon Ziviani of Direct Line home insurance, said: "The wealth of today's students really is proof that times are changing and that the majority now enjoy a degree of affluence.
"With university set to start back shortly, students are advised to either take out their own insurance or check to see if their parents' policy covers them."
Clothes and accessories represent a full 40 per cent more expenditure by students than do books and essential household accessories, the survey also found.
The average graduate is likely to have racked up over £13,000 worth of debt by the time they have left school.
