Students urged to consider home insurance

Students heading to university next month should ensure their belongings are covered by home insurance policies, it has been advised.
New research from Churchill home insurance indicates that thieves are targeting students' belongings, costing them an accumulative £126 million per year.
The insurance provider suggests that students should mark their belongings with an ultra-violet pen, in addition to protecting them via home insurance deals; Churchill indicates that 27 per cent of students currently do this.
Martin Scott, head of Churchill Home Insurance, said: "Insurance and adequate security is unlikely to be at the forefront of parents' minds as their children go off to university, but many will be surprised at the value of possessions being taken into shared accommodation or halls of residence."
"Typically these include an array of high value, portable, technical goods which are very attractive to opportunist thieves," he added.
Student top-up fees are introduced this year, creating a further cost to those studying at universities across the country.
