Students given safety advice to protect against property theft

Students about to move away to university are being advised to take a number of security measures in order to safeguard their property.
In addition to ensuring they have sufficient home insurance, Zurich has advised students to only take essential items to their new accommodation and check all doors and windows have secure locks.
They also recommend noting down all makes, models or serial numbers of any electrical items and using an ultra-violet marker pen to mark the items with the student's postcode. This helps police in recovering stolen property.
Martin Hall, head of home underwriting at Zurich, said that many students could be "leaving themselves vulnerable to huge financial losses if they fail to safeguard their hard-earned property".
Zurich Insurance has found that new students will take up to £3,000 worth of belongings with them, including laptops, DVD players, clothes and musical instruments.
