Games consoles, DVD players and laptop computers have resulted in the average child's bedroom being worth £1,498, according to new research.
At twice the amount spent on their own rooms, parents are spending £2,127 on the average 14 to 18-year-old's bedroom - making it the most expensive room in the house, says the research from Direct Line Home Insurance.
In addition, some 15 per cent of parents say their children "constantly hassle them" to buy the latest in electronics and technology, which totals £20 million across the UK.
However, the insurance firm discovered that the purchases are rarely used as the average child "spends just 14 waking hours a week in their bedroom".
Andrew Lowe, spokesman for Direct Line, said the spending was a combination of children wanting to "keep up with their mates" but also gadgets for educational use.
"In any case, it is important that parents keep track of any expensive purchases that they make for their children and ensure that they are accounted for under their home insurance policy," he continued.
According to the Association of British Insurers, home contents insurance usually covers most possessions that a homeowner would take if they moved house.
