Home insurance firm prepares for flood of claims

Home insurance provider Lloyds TSB has warned its customers to take preventative action to safeguard their homes following high tide and flood predictions.
The Environment Agency has forecast high tides and storms this autumn, which could threaten homeowners in coastal regions – particularly Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Essex and Gloucestershire.
Lloyds TSB is urging homeowners to protect their property which, if not adequately safeguarded, could be damaged and double the cost of an insurance claim.
"Burying your head in the sand is no defence against the very real threat of serious flooding," said Gary Hurry of Lloyds TSB.
"Thinking ahead and devising a plan to help reduce the risks can help homeowners minimise any potential disruption," he continued.
The preventative action recommended includes removing all electrical items and rugs from the ground floor of a property, placing all valuable items in a secure, watertight container and clearing all debris from drains and gutters.
According to the Association of British Insurers, most household insurance provides cover in the event of flooding but it recommends checking your policy to make certain this is the case.
