The number of burglaries in the UK rises by eight per cent during the winter, new research has discovered.
According to Halifax Home Insurance, the most common method for a thief to break into a house is by forcing a door lock, with 38 per cent of incidents caused this way.
Forcing a window open is the entry method in 22 per cent of burglaries, while nine per cent of break-ins happen when a thief pushes past someone who has opened the door.
Halifax Home Insurance says that the longer hours of darkness enables thieves to see whether anyone is inside the home due to the use of indoor lights. Additionally, they are provided with "extra cover" from being seen when breaking in.
The company advises homeowners to protect their property using simple security measures such as double locks, a burglar alarm or fitting timers on lights.
Through these measures, homeowners could avoid having to claim on their household insurance.
In addition to home insurance, Halifax also provides car insurance, travel insurance and a range of personal healthcare cover.
