Ensure adequate home insurance this Halloween

The number of home insurance claims increases by 150 per cent on Halloween, which is the worst day of the year for malicious damage to property, according to new research.
Norwich Union Insurance has discovered that 80 per cent of damage to homes on October 31st is caused by trick-or-treaters throwing eggs or flour.
The research also discovered that higher-costing incidents such as damage to gardens and theft from outside property are also a problem at this time of year.
For incidents caused on Halloween, the average home insurance claim was found to be £900, with 92 per cent of homeowners surveyed admitting that the festivities made them anxious and 65 per cent confessing that they dread the arrival of trick-or-treaters.
"Our research shows that trick-or-treaters are the biggest cause of Halloween nerves and only a small number of those surveyed attributed their fears to ghosts," said Jason Harris, Norwich Union's senior claims manager.
Consequently, the insurer is advising homeowners to check that their household insurance adequately covers any malicious damage that could be caused.
Norwich Union offers a range of financial services including fund management, long-term savings and general insurance.
