Home contents insurance claims 'rise in new year'

Barclays is advising homeowners to add accidental damage cover to their home contents insurance as the Christmas period nears.

According to the insurer, parties and assorted celebrations over the festive season can increase the risk of accidents such as spillages and breakages within the home.

Moreover, research conducted by Barclays revealed a 41 per cent rise in accidental damage claims in the month of January, which had the second highest amount of notifications for 2005.

Consequently, the company recommends that owners check their home contents insurance as accidents due to "party damage" may only be covered under certain policies.

"Our data shows that during the Christmas party season people are particularly likely to incur accidental damage incidents in their homes," commented Mark Till, marketing director of Barclays Insurance.

"We all know how quickly drinks get spilled or glasswork gets broken - and the cost of replacing items or cleaning carpets or furniture can quickly add up," he added.

Home contents insurance and buildings insurance are two separate entities and it is not compulsory to purchase both from the same insurer.
