Halifax: Adjust home contents insurance for Christmas

Homeowners storing presents in the house in preparation for Christmas are being advised to check they have adequate home contents insurance.
Halifax is advising people to check they will not be underinsured, as the value of home contents can rise during the festive period.
This is due to presents being kept in the house, many of which are bought for immediate family and therefore stay inside the home.
And the insurer says that many homeowners inadvertently keep goods that amount to a higher total than that covered by their home insurance.
"Although some insurers will increase contents cover over Christmas this still leaves the problem of re-evaluating your contents in the New Year," said Vicky Emmott, senior underwriter at Halifax.
"Some insurers…will penalise customers who underestimate the value of their belongings," she added.
A number of home contents insurance policies include the option of temporarily raising the amount of cover, although Halifax maintains that the Christmas and new year period is a suitable time to reconsider the value of possessions in the home.
It was recently found that Britons are planning to spend 35 per cent more this Christmas, with the highest amount being spent on groceries and food.
