Homeowners are being advised to take simple security measures this Christmas to protect them from theft which could result in a home contents insurance claim.
According to Prudential Home Insurance, one in ten plans to hide their presents in the kitchen or front room, while 56 per cent hide their gifts in the bedroom.
And ex-burglar Mark Whiteley, who has joined forces with Prudential to offer security advice, says that small measures such as ensuring effective locks on doors and windows and taking keys out of door locks could help to keep thieves at bay.
"Most burglars choose the easiest route," he said.
"When you're considering home security, try to think like a thief…if a burglar looked through your window this Christmas what would they see?"
Among other tips offered by Mr Whiteley are to consider buying time-controlled light switches to make it seem as though the house is occupied and to keep all valuables out of sight.
In addition to offering home insurance, Prudential also offers health, travel and life insurance.
