Homeowners are being advised to check their insurance policies to ensure they are protected against flood damage.
As the weather gets colder and wetter, American Express Insurance Services (AEIS) is reminding consumers that while two million properties are situated in flood-prone areas, 50 per cent of owners are unaware that they may be at risk.
And the insurer warns that over five million homeowners may not be covered by a home contents policy, which could give financial reassurance should possessions inside the home be affected by flood damage.
Joanne Field, marketing manager of AEIS, commented: "A flood can wipe out the contents of a home in minutes."
She added: "It is of concern that an estimated five million homeowners do not have contents insurance."
Tips gives to homeowners by AEIS to minimise flood damage include keeping important documents and phone numbers in a safe, high place and ensuring all family members know how to turn off utilities such as electricity or gas.
In addition to home insurance, American Express also offers travel and motor insurance.
