Parents 'claim on home insurance' for kids' belongings

Parents are being forced to claim on their home contents insurance when their children's belongings are lost or stolen, it has emerged.
According to new research from Cornhill Direct, 30 per cent of children regularly lose or are victims of theft for items such as watches, mobile phones or digital cameras.
And when they leave the house, teenagers often carry goods with a value of over £768, consisting of jewellery, clothes and electronic items, which could make them a potential target for thieves.
Mark Bishop, a spokesman for Cornhill Direct, maintains that young people are "particularly vulnerable" while outside of the home, particularly when travelling alone.
Consequently, the insurer advises consumers to cover personal possessions outside the home on their home contents insurance, which could be of financial help should a loss or theft occur.
Cornhill Direct also offers travel and motor insurance in addition to van and home insurance.
