Burst pipes warning for homeowners

Householders are being encouraged to keep the details of their home insurance provider close at hand in case their pipes burst in the cold weather.
According to Lloyds TSB Insurance, the current cold snap has found many homeowners unprepared and the bank has predicted a 15 per cent rise in the number of burst pipe home insurance claims over the next three months.
The bank also claimed that the average home insurance claim for a burst pipe is £2,500 but pointed out that higher claims have been received in the past, including one for £156,000.
"A little bit of effort now could save you a lot of wasted time and stress caused by problems such as burst pipes or broken boilers," said Phil Loney, managing director of the firm.
He added that homeowners could ensure peace of mind this winter by making sure that "you have adequate home insurance that will cover you if the icy conditions do take their toll".
Meanwhile a recent report from the AA found that many Britons whose properties have been damaged due to severe weather conditions are uncertain about home insurance claims procedures.
