British homeowners have increased the amount they spend on home furnishings and furniture, paying out a total of £13.5 billion in 2005, it emerged today.
The total compares to 1995's figure of £7.3 billion and represents a rise of 86 per cent, according to research from Halifax Credit Cards (HCC).
However, while £13.5 million could be enough to buy 61.4 million dining tables and 22.5 million sofas, the statistics could be a useful reminder to people who need to update or renew their home contents insurance.
"When it comes to furnishings, we all love filling our homes with creature comforts," said Ken Stannard, head of HCC.
And while it is nice to buy new items for a house, it is advisable to ensure they are covered by an adequate home insurance policy.
Some policies extend their level of cover over the Christmas period, but when purchasing new possessions at any time of year it may be worth checking the relevant documents and making changes if necessary.
