'Don't invalidate your home insurance'

While the prospect of a home improvement project may be tempting for some, DIY-lovers are being warned to take care and not invalidate their home insurance.
Although certain home projects can be fun and add to the value of a property, major improvements should not be attempted without enough experience, warns Halifax Home Insurance.
If something goes wrong with the DIY job, owners could be left liable for the cost of damages, according to the company, as certain jobs must only be carried out by tradespeople so as to not invalidate home insurance.
"Getting it wrong can be a disaster," remarks Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax.
"Trying to tackle certain areas that you are not qualified for, such as electrics or plumbing, could invalidate your home insurance," she adds.
Indeed, some jobs - such as installing a boiler - must only be carried out by tradesmen with the correct credentials.
