More Britons 'looking to insure themselves'

A growing number of people in the UK are looking to safeguard both themselves and their possessions by paying for home contents insurance and other insurance policies.

As Britons become more worried about falling victim to crime, a YouGov poll has discovered that homeowners are also installing security systems, such as burglar alarms and fitted windows, in order to deter burglars.

Despite falling crime figures, 52 per cent of Britons are worried about crime, 34 per cent will not open their door to a stranger, a quarter (25 per cent) have a burglar alarm and 22 per cent worry about identity theft.

Additionally, 68 per cent of the 4,000 respondents to the survey said that they actively destroy personal documentation and almost three-quarters (71 per cent) would not readily disclose their personal details.

The Safety Uncovered report reveals that one quarter of respondents to the survey have a burglar alarm fitted, one fifth have fitted windows and 20 per cent keep a dog for protection.

Other active steps that Britons take to ensure their safety include taking a taxi home in the evenings rather than walking and going ex-directory.
