Eager holidaymakers are being warned to have a thorough check of their home insurance policy before departing on a break, after new research found more then one million Britons return to find their property has been damaged.
A survey by Halifax Home Insurance discovered that those off on holiday this year could face a collective repair bill of £2.3 billion due to problems caused to the house when unoccupied.
Some 700,000 UK homeowners returned to find storm damage, while fires caused repair bills for 100,000 people.
In addition, water leaks and faulty utilities damaged homes for many, totalling £210 million worth of repairs every year.
"Home disasters can be extremely distressing at the best of times, so returning to one after a relaxing holiday would certainly bring you back down to earth with a bump," said Vicky Emmott, senior manager of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance.
"Having adequate home insurance cover to protect your property - whether it's occupied or not - is absolutely critical."
Halifax also offers travel and car insurance.
