Records 'can help home insurance claims'

Posted : 28-06-2007

Keeping a detailed record of flooding incidents can help consumers to make a home insurance claim, one industry analyst has said.

Justin Butler, the managing director of environmental consultancy and risk management firm Ambiental, said that details such as the depth and velocity of the flooding and the length of the incident should be given to a home insurance provider.

Additionally, home insurance customers should record the source of the water, whether it came from a river, through the basement or from the ground, said Mr Butler.

"All this information is very useful for the insurance companies. It's also very useful for defining the kind of flood mitigation in your case," remarked the expert.

The recent flooding that hit many areas of Britain and left some residents with huge financial losses prompted home insurance companies such as Halifax and NFU Mutual to issue advice to their customers regarding the damage.
