Home contents insurance "vitally important"

Buying home contents insurance is vitally important for safeguarding a property even though most people see it as a luxury extra, an expert in the insurance sector has claimed.

Following the recent flooding in certain UK areas, Abbey's head of insurance marketing Prasad Shastri has spoken of the public's general attitude toward home insurance and said that a good policy is necessary for protection in unforeseen circumstances such as extreme weather.

"Our research shows that each year, an average of 257,000 of all home insurance claims are declined as a result of the policyholder not having the appropriate home insurance cover," Mr Shastri said.

The comments come following weeks of torrential rain that left many residents of Yorkshire homeless.

While buildings insurance can provide financial assistance if the structure of a house is in need of repair, home contents insurance can cover possessions inside the home, with additional protection available against elements such as accidental damage.
