Government assesses flood damage

The East Midlands town of Chesterfield has received a visit from communities minister John Healey, who was there to inspect the flood damage.
Although many people in the area may have home insurance, others who do not may be facing a costly repair bill in the wake of recent heavy showers.
On viewing the disaster-hit areas, Mr Healey said that government would continue to work with local authorities to fully assess the damage and work out what would be covered by home insurance policies.
However, he maintained that more help would be given to communities who had suffered from the floods - the repair costs of which were yesterday estimated to be around £1.5 billion.
"My job now is to ensure that the local council and other agencies who lead the recovery work have got the support they need to be able to do that," Mr Healey concluded.
Property owners worried about their home insurance policy should their house be flooded may want to thoroughly check their cover plan and update it if necessary.
