'Under half' of homes get flood warning

A total of one in four homes in England and Wales are currently signed up the Environment Agency's (EA) automated flood warning system, it has emerged.
The Flood Warnings Direct System uses various methods of communication and media to alert households of potential flooding - which, when combined with a comprehensive home insurance policy, could minimise the damage and financial loss caused by extreme weather.
The EA is urging people to sign up for the free service, following widespread bursts of heavy rain which have left many people without their possessions.
"Although in these extreme events we can't always stop the floodwater, we can warn people in advance," said EA chief executive Barbara Young.
"With climate change, the likelihood of flooding will increase, and more and more of us are living in the shadow of that threat," she added.
As well as protection people for floods, the EA also works with industry for the protection of human health and the environment.
