Defaqto: Read home contents insurance carefully

This summer saw some of the worst flooding in British history and many homeowners may be left high and dry if their home insurance policies do not cover garden items, Defaqto has warned.
It is important that homeowners check their contents insurance carefully, as garden equipment many not be covered, Defaqto has reminded.
Damage to gates, hedges, fences and other assorted outside structures is also not covered by many policies. Defaqto researcher, Mel Gray said: "Approximately ten per cent of contents insurance policies currently exclude flood damage to 'contents in the open'."
This may include items such as childrens' bikes, inflatable pools, garden gnomes and trampolines. And though many people lavish hours of care and hundreds of pounds on their garden plants, these are also rarely covered.
Special policies that do cover plant damage usually range from £1,000 to £5,000.
Insurance companies have estimated that this summer's floods caused over £6 billion worth of damages.
