Halifax: Put picnic goodies on home insurance

Including picnic items and equipment on home insurance policies could minimise the financial payout incurred if they are stolen, it has been suggested.
After discovering that Britons are planning a total of 20 million picnics in the next two months, Halifax Home Insurance found that £1.5 billion worth of assorted goodies, furniture and entertainment items will be taken outdoors.
However, the company is urging people dining al fresco to make sure all their belongings are covered by their household insurance policy for any incident outside of the home.
Halifax issued the warning following research which found that 11 million adults have been robbed while in an open place since 2002.
"Thieves are opportunistic and are more likely to ruin your day if you leave your possessions unguarded," said Vicky Emmott, the firm's senior manager of underwriting.
She added that it is not just a hamper which could be stolen - it is also any personal items taken outdoors, such as wallets, iPods and cameras.
In addition to placing this type of item on a home insurance policy, it is also advisable to update a policy after Christmas, when the value of goods in a property can increase.
