Biba: Students to check home contents insurance

Students getting ready to leave home and start university are being warned to check which of their possessions are covered by their parents' home contents insurance.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) has said that although students who live away from home may be included in their parents' cover, it is worth ensuring what the limit is to prevent any disappointment should theft or damage occur.
"It's important that we get the message out there to students that they are at risk of losing their valuables," said Biba spokesperson Graeme Trudgill.
"Many household policies do cover items for students living away from home. But the limits might be quite low."
Mr Trudgill added that although many people in higher education may have never even considered buying insurance before, it is necessary as one in three students become victims of crime every year.
In addition, Biba maintained that the average value of goods being stolen in each student theft totals £900.
