Summer is "peak time" for theft

Summer months are the "peak time" for burglaries to occur and homeowners to have items stolen, it has been claimed.
American Express Insurance, which today published advice on minimising the chances of becoming a victim of burglary, cited two main reasons why more thefts may occur in the warmer season.
Firstly, criminals can take advantage of the fact that many families go on holiday during this time; secondly, homes and gardens may be more open and provide more opportunities for a thief.
The home insurance company recommended fitting an approved security alarm - as this may reduce premiums - while also using timer switches for lights and radios to give the illusion that the property is occupied when the owners are on holiday.
Taking out a "good quality" home insurance plan is also essential, American Express maintained, as it can provide protection should the worst happen.
In related news, a number of home insurance providers have recently reminded students to check their cover before departing for university next month.
Although many of those entering higher education may have their items protected through a parent's policy, this may not be enough to cover everything.
