Poor security 'can invalidate home insurance claims'

Inadequate security on a property may result in the invalidation of home insurance claims, homeowners were warned today.
Halifax Home Insurance advised homeowners to be aware of unforced opportunistic burglaries and not to make it easy for thieves by leaving doors and windows open, even when the home is occupied.
Vicky Emmott, senior underwriting manager for Halifax commented: "During the summer, we invariably see claims for unforced burglary increase dramatically, as people leave doors and windows open to keep their homes cool".
"We know that opportunist thieves are on the lookout for the chance to steal items left within easy reach such as handbags, laptops, car keys, mobile phones and MP3 players," she added.
The warning comes in the run up to national home security week (August 25th - 31st). The aim of the 2007 scheme is to promote simple measures which consumers can make use of to prevent robberies over the holiday periods.
