Home contents insurance 'should cover school bags'

Parents were advised to consider taking additional home contents insurance cover to guarantee their children's school bags are insured after new research indicated that the average bag is worth £265.
Following the results of the study by esure, parents were advised to contemplate taking out 'personal possessions away from the home' cover to their existing policy to insure family belongings against theft, damage and loss while out of the house, such as when at school.
While £265 was found to be the value of the average school bag, the research indicated that some students could be carrying over £1,000-worth of possessions including sports equipment, mp3 players, musical instruments and mobile phones.
Head of home insurance at esure Nikki Sellers said: "With the average bag at £265 it's crucial to ensure that the valuables being carried around in school bags are not only insured but, if possible, kept away from school. The best place for anything of value is at home in the bedroom rather than in the classroom."
Founded in 1999, esure employs over 1,500 people throughout the UK.
