Expensive individual items should be added to households' insurance policies, meaning that if a burglary occurs, consumers will be covered for their losses, LV= announced this week.
The insurer warned that telltale signs of expensive purchases such as packaging from DVD players, games consoles, laptops and plasma screen TVs could make a home look like a "yard sale" for thieves.
Some 5.3 million people were identified as leaving old goods outside their homes after purchasing replacements, which may alert burglars to the presence of new commodities within a home.
Warning to recyclers included not inadvertently advertising any luxurious purchases by leaving boxes from their new products outside their homes to be collected for recycling.
Consumers were advised to follow the example of 38 per cent of the population and take old possessions to a collection point or tip.
Recent research by Halifax Home Insurance warned customers that inadequate home security can result in invalidation of home insurance claims.
