Almost 80,000 bikes belonging to university students are at risk of not being covered by some form of home insurance, according to new research.
Research carried out by Direct Line Home Insurance states that the cost of students' bikes being stolen by thieves is some £18.7 million.
Direct Line head of home insurance Andrew Lowe commented: "In recent years, the number of claims for stolen bicycles has risen as much as 34 per cent in September - just when new and returning students are wheeling out their bicycles to campus and bringing them back to their halls of residence for the new academic year."
Mr Lowe added that a good quality bike lock only costs a few pounds and advised consumers to take out their own insurance or check to see if their parents' policy provides cover for them.
Earlier this year, Direct Line reported that some 439,000 bikes are stolen in the UK annually, the equivalent of 1,200 per day.
