Home insurance 'could cover university students' possessions'

Parents are being urged not to let their children forget about home insurance as they leave for university in the coming weeks by Nationwide Building Society.
Consumers could avoid paying extra to cover student possessions as their existing policy may already protect their studious offspring's belongings, according to the report.
Nationwide insurance director Robin Bailey said that tuition fees, books and accommodation fees contribute to making university a costly experience for students and parents and as such many consumers may overlook home insurance for their children.
"Parents may be unaware that their child's contents could be covered under their own home insurance policy and therefore may not need to take out additional cover while they are living at university," he added.
Recent research by Direct Line Home Insurance suggested that thieves leave university students with a bill of some £18.7 million for stolen bikes as 106 are stolen each day.
