Avoid home insurance claims 'by consulting professionals' before big DIY projects

To avoid the risk of devaluing their house, consumers - including home insurance customers - are being urged to consult professionals before carrying out major property improvements.
Halifax's Home Improvement Survey suggests that 36 per cent of people who had recently redecorated their home thought that their work had added up to £2,500 to their property's worth, while 29 per cent believed it would add value of between £2,500 and £10,000.
Patrick Sawdon of Halifax Valuers commented on the results of the study: "It's great to see that so many people are investing time and effort in improving their home."
"A word of caution though, poorly executed home improvements can actually detract from the value of your property," he said.
Damaging your home as a result of poor craftsmanship could result in the need to make a costly home insurance claim.
Parents were recently advised by Nationwide to check to see if possessions belonging to their children are covered by their existing home insurance policies when they are at university.
