Home insurance customers 'should be aware of increased number of mobile phones'

There are now more mobile phones than people in the UK, according to research released today by first direct.
Research by the bank indicates that there are almost 70 million mobile phone Sim card-registered phone numbers and over 71 million handsets in Britain, compared to just 45 million adults.
Only 12 per cent of adult respondents to the survey indicated that they do not own a mobile phone, while some nine per cent have more than four numbers and handsets.
With a national average of 1.6 phones per person in the UK, consumers should ensure that their often-pricey handsets are covered by adequate home insurance and that they are covered for when they are outside their house.
Alison Leonard, head of e-commerce at first direct, commented: "The days when we kept just one handset are fast fading, as many of us have different phones for different purposes.
"With one phone for work, one for friends and potentially a personal organiser or BlackBerry as well, mobilemania has swept the nation."
Earlier this month, Zurich advised consumers to ensure that their home insurance policies cover the costly items they carry on their person after research indicated that the average UK citizen carries some £851 of possessions with them.
